Apple has officially introduced the M6, the first of its new generation of chips and an important reference point for what users might expect from the A20 Pro, the processor expected to power the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Although Apple has yet to unveil the A20 Pro itself, details of the M6 suggest the next-generation flagship iPhone could receive significant improvements in both performance and energy efficiency.
Rather than waiting until September, Apple unexpectedly unveiled two new Macs, the Mac mini and Mac Studio, both powered by the next-generation M6 chip. That is particularly noteworthy because the M6 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s A20 Pro are being developed around the same generation of Apple chip architecture.
According to Apple, the M6 is manufactured using an advanced 2nm process, allowing a greater density of transistors to be packed into a smaller chip. The technology promises a substantial leap in both performance and power efficiency.
That could provide one of the clearest indications yet of the changes awaiting iPhone 18 Pro Max users.
2nm process could give the A20 Pro a major boost
The most important factor is the manufacturing process. The M6 is Apple’s first officially announced chip built using 2nm technology, while the A20 Pro is also expected to use a similar process.
Apple says the move to 2nm allows the M6 to achieve greater transistor density while delivering a “major leap” in performance and energy efficiency. This is particularly significant for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, as smartphones face much tighter constraints on space, heat and battery capacity than Macs.
Earlier predictions suggested Apple’s transition to the 2nm process could deliver larger-than-usual improvements. The specifications Apple has now disclosed for the M6 reinforce those expectations.
The A20 Pro, of course, will not be identical to the M6. The iPhone chip is likely to have considerably fewer CPU and GPU cores to meet a smartphone’s requirements for size, thermal management and power consumption. It would therefore be misleading to use the M6’s specifications to directly predict the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s absolute performance.
The fundamental benefits of the 2nm process, however, are likely to carry over.
A more powerful CPU, with AI getting a boost too
The M6 features an entirely new 12-core CPU, two more cores than the M5. Its configuration consists of two ultra-performance cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores.
According to Apple, the M6 delivers the world’s fastest single-threaded performance and up to 1.2 times the multi-threaded performance of the M5. While the A20 Pro could use a different CPU design, improvements in architecture and manufacturing technology could still be reflected in the chip powering the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Apple has also placed particular emphasis on the M6’s AI capabilities. The new chip features dual Neural Engines with a combined 16 cores, delivering twice the peak compute performance of the previous generation. This allows AI workloads running directly on the device to be processed more quickly.
It remains unclear whether the A20 Pro will feature a Neural Engine with a similar configuration. Still, Apple’s strong emphasis on AI performance with the M6 suggests artificial intelligence processing is likely to remain a major priority for the A20 Pro family.
iPhone 18 Pro Max could be faster while using less power
The two biggest benefits Apple has highlighted with the M6 are performance and energy efficiency. These could also become two of the most valuable upgrades to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
If the A20 Pro is indeed manufactured using the 2nm process, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could deliver higher performance while consuming less power for the same tasks. For a smartphone, that matters greatly: it could not only make the device faster, but also extend battery life and reduce heat under demanding workloads.
The precise improvement over the A19 Pro cannot yet be determined, and Apple has not released the full specifications of the A20 Pro. What the M6 has revealed, however, suggests users should not expect this to be merely an incremental upgrade.
When the iPhone 18 Pro Max officially arrives in the coming weeks, performance and battery life are likely to be among the areas Apple emphasises most heavily.
If the benefits of the M6’s 2nm process translate effectively to the A20 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could represent one of the most significant advances in processing power and energy efficiency seen in an iPhone generation in recent years.
