As the global PC market slows and consumers tighten spending, Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce a new “strategic weapon” - an affordable MacBook designed to offer exceptional value and potentially persuade even first-time buyers to make the leap.

March is expected to be a busy month packed with product launches, and industry watchers believe this lower-priced MacBook could make its debut as early as this week.

According to sources within the supply chain, Apple is confident the new model will radiate “astonishing value,” from design and performance to pricing.

One of the most appealing aspects is said to be the combination of a premium unibody aluminum chassis and vibrant, youthful color options.

That suggests Apple is not only targeting mainstream users, but also aiming squarely at students, young consumers and those entering the personal computing world for the first time.

More importantly, insiders indicate Apple holds high expectations for the product’s commercial potential. The company reportedly believes the budget MacBook will not only sell strongly, but also significantly expand its customer base - including people who currently do not own any computer at all.

Attracting Windows and Chromebook users

In the latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman predicts the affordable MacBook will quickly gain popularity.

Earlier estimates suggest this single model could account for as much as 25 percent of total mobile Mac revenue in 2025 - a remarkable figure for an entirely new product line.

Apple is also said to be placing considerable hopes on drawing users away from Windows laptops and Chromebooks.

Internally, the device has reportedly been described as an “irresistible bargain,” capable of sparking a large-scale migration between operating systems.

Beyond that, Apple believes even iPhone users who have never purchased a computer could be convinced.

With a more accessible price point combined with seamless integration across the iPhone, iPad and Mac ecosystem, the motivation to upgrade - or to buy a first computer - may become stronger than ever.

The continuity between devices, from synchronized messages, photos and documents to the ability to pick up work across multiple screens, remains a competitive edge Apple believes rivals will struggle to replicate fully.

Pricing: the decisive factor

Apple has yet to announce official pricing. However, earlier reports suggested the entry-level MacBook could be listed at US$699 or US$799.

More recent updates indicate that due to global DRAM shortages, the price may edge up to around US$749.

For comparison, the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M4 chip, 16GB unified memory and a 256GB SSD is currently priced at US$899 on Amazon.

Notably, that configuration has at times dropped to around US$749.99, even amid tight memory supply conditions.

If the new budget MacBook does launch at US$749, consumers who are not in a hurry may choose to wait a few weeks or months for promotional discounts.

Historically, Apple and major retailers often offer US$50-100 reductions after the initial sales period, particularly once demand stabilizes.

A potential sales catalyst

The significance of this launch lies not only in its price, but also in Apple’s broader strategy.

Amid fierce competition in the global PC market, introducing a more affordable device could allow Apple to expand its market share substantially, especially in emerging markets and among younger demographics.

If Bloomberg’s forecast proves accurate, the budget MacBook could become a major growth driver in 2025.

Capturing a quarter of mobile Mac revenue would translate into millions of units sold - enough to mark a meaningful turning point.

Still, the ultimate success of the device remains uncertain. Longtime Windows users’ reactions, pressure from low-cost Chromebooks and fluctuations in global component costs will all directly influence sales performance.

In the coming weeks, once Apple officially unveils the product, the market will have clearer answers.

But if current leaks are accurate, this could be the first time in years that a MacBook is no longer perceived as a “luxury” choice, but rather as an appealing option for the majority - and perhaps the starting point for millions entering the Apple ecosystem.
