“I am a real man” exhibition in Hanoi 

 

The Hanoitimes - An exhibition entitled “I am a real man” by the Centre for Studies and Applied Sciences in Gender-Family-Women and Adolescents (CSAGA) opened in the National Library of Vietnam o­n December 3. 

 

The exhibition synthesizes the results of the campaign “Men say no to domestic violence”, shares action for gender equality by men in Hanoi, and encourages men to promote gender equality and prevent violence against women.

 

“Men say no to domestic violence” is a communication campaign that was carried out by CSAGA in Hanoi from August to the end of October, 2010 and funded by the embassy of Sweden.

 

The campaign encourages men to appraise and consider traditional gender norms and develop into modern men without violence. The works in the exhibition featured the messages of the campaign.

 

Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Staffan Herrstrom said gender equality creates a society where men and women are equal and there is less domestic violence.

 

Figure painting show at Himiko Cafe

 

Five figure paintings by artist Vo Duy Don will go on display at Himiko Café from December 9.

 

The paintings in the exhibition, which is titled Phuc Cam, are anatomical studies of male and female life models. The oil paintings, which show the artist’s knowledge of human muscle and bone structure, were done in a studio at HCMC University of Fine Arts.

 

A sign on the studio door that said, “Do not come in, the artist is painting nudity” ensured that a lot of curious students and staff would visit the show.

 

The exhibition at 246 Dien Bien Phu Street will run until Dec. 9.

 

Exhibition sends a message of unity

 

An art exhibition named “Sisters” by Vu Bach Hoa and Vu Bach Lien will be held in Exhibition House 17 Ngo Quyen Street, Hanoi till December 17.

 

Sisters Vu Bach Hoa and Vu Bach Lien will bring to the exhibition two different styles of two different generations. The elder sister – Vu Bach Hoa (born in 1959) lived through the war time. Her art depicts tranquility, a simple love of peaceful times and the beauty of daily life.

 

The younger sister – Vu Bach Lien (born in 1976) expresses her ideas through digital art using paper, sculpture, lithography on stone, aluminum and digital photos. Most of her art works are about the relationship between women and children.

 

*An art exhibition called Dong Bao by Pham Huy Thong is at the Bui Gallery, 23 Ngo Van So Street, Hanoi till January 2.

 

On display are 12 paintings made of oil on canvas, retracing the nation’s history. The artist uses iconic images of Vietnam from the wars and historical turning points, and places them in a new context.

 

Dong Bao refers to the creation myth of the Vietnamese people which literally means “from the same womb of Mother Au Co.”

 

The artist’s message is one of unity which reminds Vietnamese that they are blood brothers and sisters and that they should always love, care for and respect each other.

 

Brazilian film festival in Hanoi gets underway

 

A Brazilian film festival is currently being held at the National Cinema Centre in Hanoi from December 4-10.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vietnam Department of Cinema.

 

The films screened during the event are typical of Brazilian cinema and include a variety of genres including comedies, romantic comedies, fiction, documentaries and feature films.

 

Tickets are free and can be obtained from the Brazil Embassy and the National Cinema Centre.

 

Children's literature contest launched

 

The children's literature contest 2010-2011 has recently been launched in Hanoi.

The contest, which is held by the Kim Dong Publishing House and the Danish Writers Association, features two categories: picture books and short stories.

 

The theme for the picture books, for children aged three to six years, is ‘My First Friend.’ Entries should reflect the world through the eyes of children with interesting content, joyful language and vivid illustrations.

 

‘Green Dreams’ is the theme for short stories for children 10 to 14 years old. Each story should be no longer than 5,000 words.

 

The contest is open to Vietnamese writers, painters and children at home and abroad who should send their works to the Kim Dong Publishing House, 55 Quang Trung Street in Hanoi no later than June, 30, 2011.

 

An awards ceremony is scheduled in November, 2011.

 

HCMC hosts exhibition of Vietnamese paintings

 

Paintings of Vietnam’s beautiful landscapes by 12 contemporary painters are on exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City until December 16.

The paintings depict Vietnam’s landscapes in many different areas such as the old quarter in Hanoi, Hoi An ancient town, the Central Highlands with Truong Son mountain range, peaceful villages in the north of the country and the Mekong Delta.

 

The exhibition has been co-organised by the Sunwah Fund under the Sunwah Group in Hong Kong and the HCM City Fine Arts Museum.

 

The exhibition’s organising board also holds painting courses for children, including pupils from the Nguyen Dinh Chieu school for visually-impaired children.

 

Da Nang to offer on-board fireworks viewing service

 

Preparations for the International Fireworks Competition 2010 have been started to ensure the success of the contest, said the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on December 7th.

 

The competition, with the theme “The sparkling Han River”, is expected to take place in Da Nang on April 29th and 30th, 2011.

 

Reportedly, the event’s organising board will offer between 25,000-30,000 seats to serve spectators and entrance tickets will be sold by travel agencies. In addition, in order to meet demands of visitors who wish to enjoy the view of the pyrotechnics from boats, the city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will also coordinate with People’s Committee and Border Guard Command of Son Tra Urban District to ask ship owners in the area to offer tourism services with prices not exceeding VND200,000 per person per night

 

However, fireworks viewing from boats and ports will also be strictly managed by the organising board to ensure public order and the safety of tourists, which is always a top priority for authorities.

 

“Winter Dream” concert and ballet to take place

 

A Christmas concert and ballet, “Winter Dream”, conducted by British conductor Graham Sutcliffe and performed by artists from the Vietnam Opera Ballet Theatre, will take place at the Hanoi Opera House on the two evenings of December 10th and 11th.

 

The event will entertain Hanoian audiences with such special compositions as “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” by G.F.Handel, Brandenburg Concerto No. 3,  the cantata "Jesu Joy of Man's desiring" by J.S.Bach, and ‘Winter’ from “The Four Seasons” by Vivaldi.

 

In addition, with music from “Sheherazad” by Rimsky-Korsakov and choreography by Michel Fokine, ballet dancers will perform to tell audiences various colorful stories from the famous work, “The Book of One Thousand and One Nights”, sometimes known as “The Arabian Nights”.

 

Enjoying weekend with delicious dishes 

 

A food fair entitled “Scented paddy grain in my countryside” is taking place in Binh Quoi Tourist Area No.1 in Ho Chi Minh City from December 10-12. 

 

More than 100 foods and beverages made from of will be presented at the food show.

 

Visitors will also have an opportunity to learn about rice production and the purchasing and manufacturing processes of Vietnamese handicraft products. They will also be able to enjoy the countryside market and its landscapes, which are very lively.

 

Folk games and traditional music performances will be held during the three-day food fair.

 

Entry tickets are VND220,000/adult (US$10) and VND120,000/child.

 

Charity music performance to raise money for the poor 

 

A charity music performance to raise money for the poor in the upcoming lunar New Year holiday (Tet) will take place at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on December 10. 

        

The concert is jointly organized by the Sai Gon Giai Phong (SGGP) Newspaper and Ho Chi Minh City Television.

 

Popular singers will include Anh Tuyet, My Tam, Quang Linh, Nguyen Phi Hung, Bonnuer Trinh, Dong Quan, cai luong actress Que Tran and actor Ly Hung.

 

In addition, on this occasion, the SGGP Newspaper will launch a fundraising program for the disadvantaged people so that they too can enjoy a happy Tet holiday. The organizes would like people to donate money for this worthy cause, so that we can help the poor.

 

Singers record Xmas gift for poor children

 

About 30 popular singers have made a video clip of a medley of Christmas songs to give to poor children in HCMC.

 

The singers including Cao Thai Son, Thanh Duy Idol, Wanbi Tuan Anh, Nhat Tinh Anh, Yen Trang, Yen Nhi, and bands V-music and  M.O.M, and actors Gia Bao, Nhan Phuc Vinh took three days to film the video clip.

 

The group also donated gifts to poor children on Tuesday and will visit handicapped children in Tan Phu District on December 16. The organizer will release 5,000 copies to give to the children on Christmas Day and the song will broadcast on Yeah 1 television before December 20.
