Exhibition showcases contemporary Vietnamese art

20-day exhibition featuring reflective artworks inspired by everyday life in Vietnam opens in Hanoi Wednesday.

The 863 works at the National Fine Arts Exhibition 2010, organized every five years by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, range from paintings and photos to sculptures and installations.

The exhibition aims to review fine art activities from the 2006 to 2010 period.

It will be on at the Vietnam Exhibition Center for Culture and Arts at 2 Hoa Lu Street, Hai Ba Trung District.

Cuba photo exhibition opens in Ho Chi Minh City

A photo exhibition on Cuba by Cuban photographers and the Vietnam News Agency opened in Ho Chi Minh City Sunday to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, December 2.

The exhibition, titled “Cuba – Beloved Country”, features more than 30 color photos depicting the Caribbean island’s landscapes and people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Visitors can also enjoy food and music from Cuba.

Admission to the exhibition which closes December 5 is free.

It is on at the Youth Cultural House at 4 Pham Ngoc Thach Street, District 1.

Jury of Miss Earth announced  
The jury members of the Miss Earth Pageant, including seven foreign members and three Vietnamese, were announced by the event organizers on November 30.

International members included Michael Jeffrey Rosentha, a famous photographer who has taken photos of Hollywood stars; actress Marie J.Y.E.Collart who is also a journalist and a spokeswoman of the American and French Stars channel; and Rachel Louise Grant de Longueuil, a Hollywood actress.

Ella Bella, an organizer of Miss Earth; Eddy Tan, President of Star World, FX group; and Karla Paula Henry, Miss Earth 2008, are also part of the jury.

Vietnamese jury included Pham Sanh Chau, head of the Culture, External Relations and UNESCO under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Hoang Dai Thanh, editor in chief of Young Fashion Magazine and designer Nguyen Quynh Nhu.

Drawing exceeds floor price in Hong Kong  
The autumn auction of Larasati from Singapore, part of the United Asian Auctioneers (UAA), was held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on November 27, with 183 pieces of work up for sale.

Three Vietnamese drawings by Bui Xuan Phai, Vu Cao Dam and Hong Viet Dung were sold, in particular Bui Xuan Phai’s picture was sold above the floor price.

The drawing titled “Hang Bac Street” (47x57cm) drawn by Bui Xuan Phai in 1968 had been offered for HKD80,000-120,000, but sold at HKD156,000, equivalent to US$19,900.   

Meanwhile, a picture by Vu Cao Dam with an asking price of HKD200,000-300,000 was sold at HKD240,000. Another picture by Hong Viet Dung had been predicted to earn HKD120,000-170,000 but sold for HKD120,000.

The selling price included the buyer’s insurance costs.
