Cities host December artwork exhibitions

An exhibition showcasing 169 paintings of Hanoi’s iconic Long Bien bridge during different historical periods opened Monday in the capital.

“Cau Long Bien – Ky uc va hien tai” (Long Bien Bridge – Memories and Presence) features works by 111 artists of many generations who are members of the Hanoi Fine Arts Association, as well as paintings by 60 other young artists.

Besides featuring paintings depicting the past and present, the exhibition also introduces two sculptures of the famous bridge, which was built by the French colonialists in 1899.

Long Bien survived the American war after being bombed at least 14 times by the American Air Force from 1965 – 1972, and went through several restorations and renovations under the current government.

The exhibition will run until December 29 at 93 Dinh Tien Hoang and 10 Hang Buom, Hanoi.

In Ho Chi Minh City, 26-year-old painter Nguyen The Dzung, from Thanh Hoa, opened his first individual exhibition on Saturday in District 2.

Titled “Dan bo mot con” (A herd of one cow), the exhibition displays 15 large scales paintings showing a repetitive subject with a cow’s head and a human body.

Although all the items are oil paintings, their surfaces appear as smooth as lacquer paintings due to a special technique, which requires the artist to first smooth out his canvas and then the work itself after painting each of the layers.

It took Dzung at least one month to create each painting, he said, adding that he took his inspiration from the quest to find one’s true identity in a society.

Dzung is now pursuing a Master of Art degree at the Vietnam Fine Arts University.

His exhibition is open until December 31 at the Cactus Contemporary Art Gallery at 3-13 Quoc Huong, Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh.
