Vuon doi (Garden of life) scripted by Nguyen Quy Dung is an action and martial arts 32-episode TV series. The Nam Sai Gon Film Studio movie depicts poor children living along railway tracks. They lack love, care and education from their families and there is no one to tell them how to differentiate between good and evil.
Fortunately the community and the government take interest in the disadvantaged children and protect them from evil and lead the children on the right path. The children take part in martial art classes and build a sporting and competitive spirit.
Director Nguyen Quoc Thinh said that the movie was a chance and a challenge to describe the usefulness of martial arts in developing a sporting spirit.
The film will be on air at 8.45 pm from Wednesday to Sunday every week on HTV 7 from July 7.
On the other hand, the 40-part TV serial, Luc lac huyen bi (The magic tintinnabulum) will be aired at 6 pm Monday to Wednesday and also on Sunday on HTV 9.
This fiction film is produced by Ho Chi Minh Television Film Studios (TFS) and has attracted many children with its funny stories.
VN record book seeks 200 more food specialties
The Vietnam Records Book Center (Vietkings) is planning to seek 200 more food and fruit specialties across the country to add to its collection of over 300 listed in the last 3 years in an attempt to promote specialties to tourists.
Under the plan, Vietkings will gather opinions from food distributors and exporters in 63 provinces in Vietnam to search for 100 dishes cooked by local people.
The center will also consult fruit research centers in recognizing a further 100 natural specialties.
Launched 3 years ago, the program aimed at recognizing Vietnamese specialties has gathered over 300 dishes including those cooked by the Vietnamese people and natural specialties, said Vietkings’ general director Le Tran Truong An.
The additional 200 specialties are expected to be released this August and November.
Festival on Vietnamese cuisine kicks off today
A festival featuring cuisines from the North, the South and the Central of Vietnam is open today (July 6) in the central province of Phu Yen.
“The North – Central – South Cuisine Festival 2011” will feature 40 booths and showcase dishes from 25 restaurants from 14 cities and provinces across the country.
The festival, a highlight for the National Tourism Year in the South Central Coastal provinces – Phu Yen 2011, aims to honor the traditional cuisine as well as seek and develop high-quality
foods to serve tourists, Le Mai Khanh, vice head of the festival’s organizing board, said.
The event at Thuan Thao Convention and Ecology Center at 2 Hai Duong – Tuy Hoa City – Phu Yen province will run until July 9.
Phu Quoc dogs attend world canine show 2011
Two Phu Quoc ridgeback dogs will attend the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) World Dog Show 2011 to be held in Paris from July 7-10.
A Phu Quoc ridgeback named Đốm, a breed of dog from Phu Quoc Island off the Vietnamese southern province of Kien Giang, was sent to Paris on Monday night.
Another one named Vện (stripes) is also expected to join Đốm (spots) in the coming days.
This year’s world dog show has attracted canines of all breeds from 130 countries and territories as part of activities to celebrate FCI’s 100th founding anniversary.
At the international dog show held in Belgium’s Anvers city in July, 1894, two Phu Quoc dogs Xoai (Mango) and Chuoi (Banana) were priced at 25,000 Belgian franc, 200 – 250 times more expensive than other four-legged contestants.
The World Dog Show is a sanctioned international dog show, held annually since 1971.
The show features skills of man’s best friends including agility, obedience, emotion, in addition to other dog-related events and demonstrations.
World Wildlife Fund celebrates birthday with film contest
To mark its 50th birthday, the global conservation organization World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has launched a short film contest to inspire people to reconnect with nature, a representative said Monday.
Title “Life. Nature. You. Make the Connection," the contest will select the two best proposals to award a minimum budget of US$10,000 for filming (award-wining films must not exceed 2 minutes) as well as a paid trip to India to attend the CMS Vatavaran Environmental Film Festival.
Each applicant can submit two entries. The deadline for submission is October 9.

Vietnamese artists to campaign for environment
A group of Vietnamese artists, journalists and educators will take part in a tour around Vietnam to talk and screen films about environmental issues.
Organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism and Film No.1 Joint-Stock Company, the Green Vietnam Journey will visit different regions that are suffering from serious environmental problems such as the Central Highlands and Ho Chi Minh City.
The delegation, including singer Cam Tu, musician Duong Cam, painter Tham Cam Phuong and Miss Beauty Ngoc Han, and photographer Na Son, will hold talk shows, screen movies, make documentaries as well as gather people’s opinions about environmental issues.
The delegation will set off tomorrow, July 6, in the Central Highlands before visiting other place.

Funding shortage threatens history magazine
The Thua Thien – Hue Association of Historical Sciences has asked the provincial People’s Committee to suspend the publication of its magazine Hue Xua va Nay (Hue – The Past and the Present) at the end of this year because of a lack of money.
Launched in 1992, the magazine, with one edition every two months, has become one of Vietnam’s most prestigious history magazines.
It has published 105 editions, each of which is 100 to 150 pages.
The magazine, whose staffs are made up of an editor-in-chief and 3 administrators and technicians, is housed inside Phu Xuan University.
According to Le Van Thuyen, Secretary General of the association, the provincial People’s Committee provides the magazine a total VND50-105million (US$2500-5250) per year which is only enough to pay for the publication of 6 editions.
The association itself has cover the rest including staffs’ salaries, contributors’ royalties and administrative fees.
The provincial People’s Committee however hasn’t made its decision.
“We are still looking into the problem”, Nguyen Van Cao, Chairman of Thua Thien – Hue Province’s People’s Committee told Tuoi Tre on Monday.
Traditional Vietnamese music course held in Paris
The first ever course of traditional Vietnamese music has concluded in Paris recently.
A closing ceremony was held at the Centre for Vietnamese Culture in Paris on July 4 with a special performance of Vietnamese folk songs and traditional music instruments.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ho Thuy Trang, an overseas Vietnamese in France, the lecturer of the course, said that most of the learners are foreigners, who loves Vietnamese folk music and have fine impression about the country.
Since 2003, she has trained about 60 foreign people in France in Vietnamese traditional music. At present, she runs two 16-chord zither classes, one in Marseilles (France) and another in Lausane (Switzerland). She plans to open a class in Bordeaux in the coming time.
Trang said she hoped that by this way, she would bring more the French people and foreign friends to Vietnam and help them have better understanding about the Vietnamese culture.
Hoi An Museum receives donation
The Hoi An Culture Heritage Preservation and Management centre recently received a donation of 56 valuable objects related to the formation and development of the old city of Hoi An.
The objects include a Dong Son bronze drum, two Japanese coins from the end of the 17th century and 21 daily-use objects which are more than a century old.
Three of the donors were from the north of the country while the remaining artefacts came from people and organisations based in Hoi An.
Show to feature songs by Pham Duy
A music show featuring veteran composer Pham Duy will be organised on July 22-23 at the Ha Noi Opera House.
Famous Vietnamese singers such as Cam Van, Duc Tuan, My Linh, Khanh Linh, Viet Hoan and Phuong Ha will sing songs by the composer including some of his revolutionary songs which have not been as popular among audiences as his love songs.
Pham Duy, who was born in Ha Noi in 1921, is a popular name in Viet Nam's modern music. During his career he has been a composer, singer and music researcher.
BeyBlade Cup held in Vietnam for the first time
The first BeyBlade Cup is being held in Vietnam from July 3-24 by Takara Tomy Company.
The five qualifying rounds will take place every Sunday from July 3-24, one in Hanoi and four in Ho Chi Minh City. The final round will be held at the Youth Cultural Palace in Ho Chi Minh City on July 24.
The contest is for two age groups (6-7 and 8-11). The winners of both groups will represent Vietnam at the Asian BeyBlade Cup in Japan as from August 21 to compete with other rivals from Japan, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
Any player aged between 6 and 11 can register for the contest at the www.cupbeyblade.com.vn website which provides detailed information about the contest regulations.
The BeyBalde humming-top is a toy based on the traditional humming-top in Asian countries.
Lang Co festival takes place at weekend
The Lang Co Festival 2011 – the World Beautiful Bay will be held in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on July 9-10 to promote tourism and encourage investment in the Lang Co-Chan May economic zone.
This year’s festival aims to honour cultural values, landscapes and eco-environment and affirm position and prospects of the Lang Co-Chan May economic-tourist zone in the province’s socio-economic development orientations in the coming years, said Phan Tien Dung, Director of the Thua Thien-Hue Culture, Sports and Tourism Department.
It also aims to evaluate to what extent the Bay can contribute to promoting tourism development two years after it was recognised by Worldbays Club as one of the “World’s Most Beautiful Bays”, he added
The festival includes various and diverse activities such as exhibitions, cuisine fair, fish spraying festival, traditional rowing race and other sportive activities.
Lying between Da Nang and Hue cities, Lang Co Bay, Hai Van pass, Bach Ma Natural Reserve and an ancient fishing village in this area present a wonderful view of people living in harmony with nature.
Lang Co Bay has a 13-km long beach with white sand and blue water. It has Lap An lagoon, a brackish water lagoon extended to 1,500 ha with rich natural resources.
The Bay adjacent to Hai Van Pass lies in the central area, where visitors can reach four world cultural heritages in Vietnam, namely Hue relics, royal court music, Hoi An ancient town and My Son relics, within a radius of 70 km.
Search on for Miss Teen Vietnam
A contest to find talented and beautiful teenage Vietnamese girls named Miss Teen 2011 was launched last week, reports VietnamPlus.
Phan Anh Tuan, head of the organizing committee, said: “The contest is open to girls who have talents such as singing, dancing, modeling, acting and performing as MCs.”
Contestants are evaluated based on the following criteria: talent and knowledge (30%); beauty (30%); friendliness (20%) and behavior (20%).
Participants will be trained professionally during and after the contest to develop their ability in the field of art.
Prizes up for grabs are - Miss Teen 2011 which is worth VND100 million, Miss Talent (VND60 million), Miss Beauty (VND40 million), Miss Friendly (VND20 million), Miss Fashion (VND20 million) and Miss Community Star (VND20 million).
The search is organized by the Ministry of Education and Training and VTC.
Contestants have to enter before August 15.
