Berliner Symphoniker orchestra to perform in Vietnam

Germany’s Berliner Symphoniker orchestra will perform at the Hanoi Opera House on July 14-15 after touring Japan.

The 20-item performance will draw the participation of Vietnam’s violinist Bui Cong Duy and the Republic of Korea (RoK)’s violinist Kun-Woo Paik under the baton of world-famous conductor Lior Shambadal.

The orchestra was founded in 1967 and has performed in many countries over the world. In Asia, it has visited Japan, the RoK and China for many times.

Flying to Vietnam this time, Berliner Symphoniker consists of 60 instrumentalists from Germany, the US, Australia, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Japan and Vietnam.

Self-portrait contest inspires local artists

The second Dogma Prize in Self-Portraiture for artists aged 18 and over will award a top prize of US$6,000 this year.

Painting, sculpture and photographic submissions will be taken until August 7 and winners will be announced on September 14.

The prize is organized by the Mekong Artists Company and sponsored by arts collector Dominic Scriven, sponsor of Dogma Collection and Dogma Prize.

The prize will be judged by Ma Thanh Cao, director of the HCM City Fine Arts Museum; artist and art critic Pham Thi Nhu Quynh, owner of the HCM City-based Galerie Quynh; and Italian artist Richard San Marzano, curator of the Dogma Collection.

"We want to inspire Vietnamese artists to make themselves the subject in their paintings," said Marzano.

Fellow jury-member Cao said the prize would contribute to encouraging self-portraiture works in Vietnam.

Artists aged 18 and above who are living in Vietnam can send their submissions to www.dogmaprize.vn.

The curatorial panel will grant three special recognition prizes of VND15 million (US$750) to each artist selected from the finalists.

The top self-portraits in the competition will be included in the upcoming exhibition Vietnamese Self-Portraits at the HCM City Fine Arts Museum in September.

Last year, the annual Dogma Prize received more than 230 submissions from artists across the country, with first prize given to Hanoi-based painter Nguyen Van Cuong.

Documentary on S.Korean stars to hit local screens

A documentary featuring the road to glory of a number of South Korean singers will be screened in Vietnam next month.

Titled “I Am: SM Town Live World Tour in Madison Square Garden,” the movie gathers stars from SM Entertainment Company, including names which are favored in Vietnam like BoA, Kangta and Super Junior, SNSD, SHINee, f(x) and TVXQ bands.

Super Junior and SNSD performed in Hanoi in March at the “Vietnam – South Korean” music festival.

The film, directed by Choi Jin-sung, depicts the journey to success from when the artists were still in their training period.

It will be premiered in Vietnam on June 22, a moth after it is screened in Korea.

In recent years, Hallyu (Korean Wave) has achieved strong appeal among youths in Asian countries, including Vietnam.

Last month, South Korea's popular boy group Big Bang also hit local fans with their performance at the 9-hour-long festival called Soundfest, held in Ho Chi Minh City. Many audience members even fainted or sustained injuries while jostling each other to catch a glimpse of their idols.

Project launched to promote World Heritage sites in central region

The UNESCO Hanoi Office will launch a project on ‘Promoting World Heritage sites in Vietnam’s Central Region’ in Hoi An city on May 8.

The aim of the project is to connect three World Heritage sites in the region, including the Hue Monuments Complex in Hue city, Hoi An ancient town and My Son sanctuary in Quang Nam province, to promote tourism development in the region and produce more benefits for the local communities at the sites.

The project will investment in producing flyers, brochures and handbooks in English and Korean to provide tourists with information about various places of interest, such as typical handicraft villages, and the traditional cultures of the destinations.

Asiana Airlines from the Republic of Korea, which recently launched a new route in December 2011 linking the Korean capital Seoul with Da Nang , is supporting the project and has pledged to advertise the three Vietnamese sites for free on its international flights.

It will also fund solar energy lighting systems at all three sites, with the system in Hoi An scheduled to be put into operation this year.

 

Painting exhibition of Russian artist at HCMC Fine Arts Museum

A painting exhibition featuring 120 art works by Russian painter Boris Simionovich Iliukhin will be on display at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum from May 8-17.

Exhibits in oil and watercolors of landscapes, still life and portraits of war heroes, scientists and artists are on display.

The exhibition marks the 67th anniversary of victory over fascism.

In addition, painter Vinh Phoi, former deputy head of Hue Art University, presented to the public 50 art works in oil and watercolors and sculpture pieces at the museum on May 6. The show will last until May 15.

S.Korean and Australian singers join MTV EXIT Hanoi

The free concert “MTV EXIT Live in Hanoi”, to be held later this month, has just added two foreign artists to its performer list besides Canadian rock band Simple Plan, who was announced earlier.

They are the 4-member girl group Brown Eye Girls from South Korea, and Australian singer Kate Miller Heidke.

Brown Eye Girls consists of four members: JeA, Miryo, Narsha, and Gain. They debuted as an R&B/ballad vocal group in 2006 and challenged themselves with different music genres. The girls are known in Vietnam for their hits including “L.O.V.E.,” “How Come,” “Abracadabra” and “Sign.”

Born in 1981, Kate Miller Heidke is a singer-songwriter from Brisbane. Although classically trained, she has pursued a career in alternative pop music. In 2008, Miller-Heidke and Nuttall were awarded a $US25,000 grand prize in the 2008 International Songwriting Competition held in the US for their composition titled "Caught in the Crowd". She has released four albums, the latest of which is “Nightflight”, produced this year.

“MTV EXIT Live in Hanoi,” which will take place at Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium on May 26, will also feature a number of local singers including pop singer My Tam, rock band Buc Tuong, and rapper Karik.

The event which will be held by worldwide music channel MTV’s End Exploitation and Trafficking Foundation aims to raise awareness and increase prevention of human trafficking.

At the concert, the organizers will present singer My Tam as the foundation’s representative in Vietnam. The pop singer has been chosen to be the narrator of the half-hour documentary titled “Enslaved:
An MTV Exit special” which will be broadcast on Vietnam television and MTV Vietnam this month.

In 2010, MTV EXIT Vietnam invited South Korean band Super Junior to be the show’s guest artists, an appearance which excited thousands of local youths.
