VietNamNet Bridge – The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MoCST) has asked radio and television broadcasters to not allow artists who have been fined for wearing scanty clothes to appear on their shows.

Singer Minh Hang was fined for wearing this costume.

The local media recently reported a series of scandals related to singers, models and actresses who were blamed for breaking Vietnam’s customs and habits. Some of them were fined for their acts. Model Thanh Hang and singer Thu Minh had to pay VND3.5 million ($170) each for smoking on the catwalk and wearing scanty clothes. Model Thai Ha was fined with VND5 million ($250) for showing her breast during a fashion show. Previously, singers Thuy Tien, Yen Trang and model Ngoc Quyen were also criticized for similar mistakes.

These scandals have also stirred up social concerns.

The MoCST on April 16 issued an instruction, asking relevant agencies to tighten control over performing art activities.

To show its determination in curbing violation in performing art activities, on May 18 the Ministry organized a video conference on the issue, with the participation of state agencies, journalists, artists and show organizing firms.

Because of the absence of young singers, models and modeling companies at the conference, the Ministry held another meeting on June 1, which focused on the implementation of the Ministry’s instruction on controlling performing art activities.

Some representatives of models attended the meeting, including former model Thuy Hang, director of Elite Vietnam, Quang Tu, director of New Talent Modeling Company, Le Thi Quynh Trang, representative of the Vietnam’s Next Top Model TV show and two models Truong Tung Lan and Nguyen Thi Loan.

At the conference, the MoCST stated to impose tougher penalty on artists’ violations.

In the Ministry’s new decree on managing performing art activities, which is being submitted to the government for approval, the MoCST proposed that artists who willingly change their performances, wear scanty clothes, have rude statements or lip-sync will face tough punishment, including withdrawal of performance license and being banned from stage from 6 months to 2 years.

Besides receiving monetary fines, artists who violate in performing costumes will not be allowed to perform overseas as well.

The Ministry has also sent dispatches to local and national television and radio broadcasters, asking their combination in solving this issue, by not broadcasting art shows in which artists lip-sync, perform unlicensed works or wear scanty clothes.

The MoCST’s move is highly appreciated as a tough measure to curb violations in performing art activities because the current fine is not strong enough to prevent artists from breaking the rules.

Based on the MoCST’s dispatch, a lot of celebrities--like singer Thu Minh and Minh Hang, models Bebe Pham, Ha Anh, Thai Ha, etc. are considered to be on the black list.
