The success of the Vietnamese national team at the 2024 ASEAN Cup, with significant contributions from naturalized striker Nguyen Xuan Son, has reignited discussions about the use of naturalized players.
Leaders of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) emphasized a balanced approach, focusing on sustainable player development rather than adopting the aggressive naturalization strategy seen in Indonesia.
A measured approach to naturalized players
Nguyen Xuan Son, the first naturalized player to represent Vietnam in an official tournament, played a key role in the ASEAN Cup victory. However, VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu stated that Vietnam remains committed to prioritizing youth development.
“We naturalized Nguyen Xuan Son at the right time, creating a positive impact. Unfortunately, he suffered a severe injury and will be sidelined for several months. While the VFF supports naturalization, whether a player joins the national team depends on the head coach’s decision,” Tu explained.
He added, “Indonesia’s aggressive naturalization strategy has left gaps in their youth development system, affecting their ability to field key domestic players. This serves as a lesson for us. The world prioritizes youth training, and Vietnamese football must do the same.”
Domestic leagues and sacrifices for the national team
Tu highlighted the importance of balancing domestic league schedules with national team commitments. “Clubs have shown great support for the national team, even when key players have been injured during training camps.
The VFF highly values their sacrifices, and the Vietnam Professional Football (VPF) is working on a 2024/25 schedule to reduce strain on players while ensuring adequate preparation for the national team.”
Exceptional team spirit
Tu praised the team’s unity and dedication during their month-long training camp. “The players displayed remarkable camaraderie. Captain Duy Manh was a true leader, fostering unity and joy within the team, alongside Quang Hai and Tien Linh.
Even injured players like Doan Ngoc Tan, who sustained a foot injury after scoring against the Philippines, continued to support the team. His professionalism was outstanding; instead of returning home after the ASEAN Cup, he stayed in Thailand to prepare for Thanh Hoa’s club matches.”
Tu recounted the motivational speeches of head coach Kim Sang Sik, who inspired the team with the mantra, “First, we win the championship. Second, we win the championship. Third, we win the championship.”
In the second leg of the final, when Xuan Son was injured, Kim encouraged the team to “play for their injured teammates,” further boosting their determination.
The success of the national team comes amid challenges for Vietnamese football in 2024. “There were results that disappointed fans and gave us headaches,” Tu admitted. “However, the ASEAN Cup victory and milestones like the women’s futsal team winning the regional championship against Thailand, and the men’s futsal team defeating Thailand on their home turf for the first time, have brought great joy.”
