VietNamNet Bridge – Very few Vietnamese movies are being preserved at the Asian Film Archive (AFA), archivist Karen Chan told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper at the AFA's 10th anniversary celebrations in Singapore.
Among the seven Vietnamese movies being preserved there are Bao Gio Cho Den Thang Muoi (When the Tenth Month Comes); Thuong Nho Dong Que (Nostalgia in the Countryside); Ganh Xiec Rong (The Travelling Circus); and Canh Bac (The Gamble); besides Em Be Ha Noi (The Little Girl of Ha Noi). They are among 1,700 movies being kept in good condition at the AFA.
When the Tenth Month Comes and Nostalgia in the Countryside are masterpieces of veteran Dang Nhat Minh. Produced in 1984, When the Tenth Month Comes was picked as one of the best Asian films of all time by CNN.
The story is from the point of view of a young Vietnamese widow regarding the legacy of the American war. It was released internationally under the name The Love Doesn't Come Back.
The Little Girl of Ha Noi by Hai Ninh won the Golden Lotus at the third Viet Nam National Film Festival and a diploma at the ninth Moscow International Film Festival.
On the occasion of the 10 anniversary celebrations of the AFA, 10 filmmakers from Viet Nam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, besides Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines gathered to discuss Southeast Asian cinema and screen their short films.
