Four of the world’s 3,126 most highly cited scientists that Thomson Reuters has recognized are Vietnamese. Of the four Vietnamese scientists who are among the top one percent of most influential scientists, Nguyen Xuan Hung is the only one who lives and works in Vietnam. And this is the second time his name was found on the list.

Scientists have had their research papers frequently cited in reports published by other scientists, showing that what they produced is considered to be important by their peers. To be categorized as a Highly Cited Paper, a report must rank in the top 1 percent of most cited for their subject field and publication year. Hung is among the most highly cited in the computer science category.

To date, Hung has had 90 ISI articles published in prestigious journals in the US, UK, Netherlands and Singapore.

Hung was once a student at the HCM City University of Natural Sciences, which is a member of the HCM City National University. After finishing the school, he continued a postgraduate training course and obtained a master’s degree.

He then received a scholarship for doctoral study at the University of Liege in Belgium. After receiving the doctorate, he returned to Vietnam where he works as a lecturer at universities and continues his scientific research.

He was lecturer at the HCM City University of Natural Sciences, HCM City University of Transport, Vietnam-Germany University, and now is a lecturer and director of the Research Center of Hutech University.

“I decided to come back to Vietnam because of a simple reason: in Vietnam, I can live near my parents. And naturally, I want to stick to the working environment in Vietnam,” he said.

“It is the right of everyone to make decisions for his future. As for me, living and working in the homeland is on the top priority,” he explained.

According to the young scientist, every working environment has its own favorable conditions and difficulties. As for Hung, the difficulties are not too serious, because he has family, colleagues and students as moral support.

To date, Hung has had 90 ISI articles published in prestigious journals in the US, UK, Netherlands and Singapore.

His research focuses on developing powerful calculation tools and simulation calculations on computers, being applied in mechanical engineering, mechanical biological and materials.

Hung went on to say that he doesn’t care about living overseas or in Vietnam. The most important thing is that he can work in an environment where he can have freedom in research to create innovative products.
