This figure was revealed at a meeting on human resource training for the atomic energy sector chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, who is also the head of the National Steering Committee on human resource training for the sector, in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), Viet Nam currently has 1,300 officials with university degrees or higher working in ministries, sectors and localities in the area of atomic energy.

With such a limited number of staff, MoST stressed on the need for the recruitment and training of an additional 5,000 people by 2020.

Dam said it was necessary to make preparations in human resources, technology, finance and legal mechanisms for the construction of nuclear power plants approved by the Government in future.

He asked relevant ministries and sectors to undertake detailed research into human resource demands for the atomic energy sector and to develop appropriate training projects. He emphasised that staff training in this field must be practical to avoid inefficiency and wastefulness.

The Ministry of Education and Training stressed on the importance of identifying the exact demand for human resources in the atomic energy sector until 2020 and then till 2030. It said only when the demand for staff in nuclear plants and sectors is identified will a comprehensive plan for HR training be fully developed.
