According to government directions, vehicles without ETC tags or insufficient money in ETC accounts won't be allowed to enter expressways nationwide.
The Noi Bai-Lao Cai and Danang-Quang Ngai were the last two expressways in the country to turn to full automatic non-stop toll collection.
Vietnam started introducing the ETC system in 2015 but has faced slow progress in expanding the model.
On June 1 this year, the Hanoi-Hai Phong Highway was the first in the country to fully apply automatic non-stop toll collection. Drivers without ETC tags or insufficient money in ETC accounts will be fined between VND2-3 million and have their driving licences withdrawn for between 1-3 months if they intentionally enter the highway.
The Ministry of Transport has asked local authorities nationwide to encourage people to register for electronic toll payments.
So far, more than 3.50 million out of 4.80 million automobiles in Vietnam, or 75 percent have registered for automatic toll payment. The ministry sets a target of having 90 percent of vehicles registering for ETC by September this year.
