VietNamNet Bridge – The Golden Kite Awards seem unattractive to both producers and audiences lately and have faced criticisms after nominating two unreleased movies.

Scandal-Red Carpet Secrets is one of the outstanding nominees.

Despite attempts by the Vietnam Cinematography Association to encourage producers, only 11 of nearly 20 released movies participated in the annual Golden Kite awards. It is said that this year was not competitive because there are only few outstanding movies.

The awards usually offer little chances for mainstream movies. This may have discouraged many producers from submitting their movies to the awards although the number of released movies and audience feedback have increased in the past years.

In this year awards, Scandal-Red Carpet Secrets and Thien Menh Anh Hung (The Blood Letter) are two outstanding movies that have gained good reviews and revenue last year.

However, the award has been under criticism because two of the nominated movies, Cat Nong (Hot Sand) and Lac Loi (Lost) have yet to be released.

Deputy Standing President of Vietnam Cinematography Association, Nguyen Thi Hong Ngat said the nominated movies needed to only obtain permits to be issued.

Cat Nong was completed before the Hanoi International Film Festival held last year but for some reason it hasn't been released. Lac Loi also has just obtained permission." she said.

According to Ngat, since the awards were from the association, the winning movies did not need to be popular at the box office.

Many said a winning movie that hasn't been released to the public was an unconvincing win and her opinions obviously underestimated audience opinions. Moreover, the Golden Kite was criticised as it should have taken into account audience views, to make them more credible and different from a closed awards ceremony.

Tran Luan Kim, Head Judge of the Golden Kite awards 2012 also agreed that the association needed criteria to select the nominees.

Ngat said they would consider banning unreleased movies from being submitted.
