VietNamNet Bridge – The People’s Committee in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue has proposed to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to recognize the ‘Azakooh’ festival and ‘Zeng Weaving’ in A Luoi District as national intangible heritage.

‘Azakooh’ is a unique festival of indigenous ethnic minority communities who live in the rugged mountainous region of A Luoi District.

This is the biggest festival in the area and is connected with the traditional ‘Le Hoi Dam Trau’ (buffalo slaughter) held three or five times a year.

During the worship ritual, people thank and worship the gods, wishing for a bumper crop, peaceful life, no illnesses or quarrels between villagers or tribes.

Numerous traditional kinds of music, dance and drawings imbue the identity of the indigenous ethnic minority communities, who all flock at the ‘Azakooh’ festival.

Zeng weaving is an art form of its own, but for ethnic minority people in the mountainous area of Thua Thien Hue Province, this is more than an art -- it is a reflection of their culture and a traditional handicraft of the people of A Luoi District. Zeng woven fabrics have come to the attention of both local and international designers.
