The park which is located in the northern province of Bac Can, was recognised as an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2004.
It has met seven out of nine criteria necessary to be on the Ramsar list.
Viet Nam participated in the Ramsar Convention in 1989. The list is the keystone of the convention. Its chief objective is to "develop and maintain an international network of wetlands that are important for the conservation of global biological diversity and for sustaining human life through the maintenance of their ecosystem components, processes benefits and services."
In 1995, Ba Be Lake in the national park was recognised by the World Lake Conference as one of the world's 20 freshwater lakes in need of protection.
Viet Nam is proposing UNESCO recognise the park as a natural world heritage site.
