The Ba Ria - Vung Tau province is conducting a rehabilitation of the coral reef at the Ramsar area of Con Dao National Park, according to the Department of Science and Technology of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province.

After completion, the coral reefs in the Con Dao marine area will be revitalised, followed by a restoration of marine biodiversity, especially of living aquatic species. Meanwhile, reproduction in coral reefs will grow and marine resources will be reproduced rapidly.
The Department of Science and Technology of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province will coordinate Con Dao National Park to organise communication training courses in order to raise community awareness in restoring and protecting coral reefs in the region.
Earlier, according to the management board of Con Dao National Park in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, a large swathe of coral reef in Con Dao have suffered bleaching and it is estimated that reef die off extends to an area of about 600ha to 800ha. Coral bleaching occurs very fast, in some places up to 70%.
Bleached and dying coral groups and species are mostly Stony corals, Staghorn corals, reef coral groups and fungal coral species. The depth of bleached coral is from 3 metres to 15 metres.
Through the survey, the cause of the situation has been established as being due to rising sea temperatures and the impact of a stronger El Nino phenomenon.
