Badminton Young athletes to compete at Asian champs

Viet Nam will send five representatives to compete at the Badminton Asia Youth U17&U15 2013 Championships starting tomorrow in Indonesia.

Nguyen Thi Tham, Nguyen Thuy Linh, Tran Truong Bao Vy and Nguyen Thi Phuong Ha will take part in the girls' singles event. Nguyen Binh Minh will participate in the boys' singles.

Tham and Minh then team up to play in the mixed doubles while the other four girls are to play in the girls' doubles event.

The finals are scheduled for October 13.

T&T win maiden trophy at U21 football

Ha Noi T&T's U21 football team yesterday defeated Vinh Long 2-0 in the final at Lach Tray Stadium in Hai Phong City to win the U21 football championship for the first time.

Minh Hai scored the opening goal in the last minute of the first half and Van Thanh sealed the game for the Ha Noi-based team as in the second half he successfully converted a penalty after Van Tam was fouled in the box.

Song Lam Nghe An and Hai Phong shared third place. Tran Dinh Truong, who is also the best scorer with three goals, was named the best player of the tournament, while the best goalkeeper title was awarded to Nguyen Van Cong of T&T.

The annual tournament is organised by Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper with the participation of eight teams from across the country.

Thailand win Yamaha ASEAN U13 Football Cup in Hanoi

Thailand defended their title at the Yamaha ASEAN U13 Football Cup in Hanoi on October 6.

The Thai team beat the Indonesia Red team 3-2 after extra time.

It is the third time Thailand have won the tournament since it started in 2008.

In the third-place playoff, Vietnam 1 defeated Indonesia White 2-0 to take the bronze medal.

The organisers selected the line-up for the tournament, in which Vietnam 1, represented by Viettel FC, contributed defender Pham Dinh Han and forward Bui Anh Duc.

Vietnam 2 (Song Lam Nghe An FC) enrolled the services of defender Nguyen Nghi Phuong.

Player of the tournament went to striker Amirullah Ruslan of Indonesia Red.

Striker Muhamad Yusuf of Indonesia Red was the best scorer with five goals.

 Hue, Luat claim victory at Hanoimoi Newspaper – Run for Peace

Pham Thi Hue of Quang Ninh siezed the women's open category at the Hanoimoi Newspaper – Run for Peace yesterday in Ha Noi.

Hue finished a mere second ahead of teammate Vu Thi Tinh and Nguyen Dang Thanh Thuy from Khanh Hoa.

"It is the second year I have taken part in this competitive and prestigious tournament. This year, I have seen many strong rivals who forced me to work harder to win the title."

The running event attracted more than 1,200 competitors, both Vietnamese and foreigners.

"The experience of competing in the Hanoimoi tournament will help me a lot in my future career," Hue said after receiving her gold medal.

The men's open category title went to Do Quoc Luat of Border Guard. Le Van Thao of Thanh Hoa and Nguyen Vinh Thien from Khanh Hoa placed second and third, respectively.

Tsogtbaotar Myaymarkhorol, a Mongolian student competing in the foreigners events, claimed the women's pool while Hugo Page, a Canadian teacher, took out the men's gold.

Khanh Hoa Province topped the women's rankings while Border Guard dominated the men's podium.

Viet Nam beats Hong Kong 5-1 in AFC qualifier

Viet Nam defeated Hong Kong 5-1 in the second round of the Asian Football Confederation Under-19 qualifying round on Saturday in Malaysia.

Striker Nguyen Cong Phuong scored twice, with Van Son and Nguyen Van Toan netting a goal each for Viet Nam. The final goal was an own goal by Hong Kong.

Forward Tsang Hin scored the only goal for Hong Kong at the 70th minute, making it the first goal of the team at the Championship.

The second win allows Viet Nam to hold onto second place in Group F, behind Australia who are on six points.

Viet Nam will face Australia in the last round today, with the match winner to compete at the finals in Myanmar next year.
