About 400 artists will perform in a ceremony on May 5 in Quy Nhon city to honorarily recognise Choi singing (a genre of folk music practised in Vietnam’s central region) as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The event is co-organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Binh Dinh province People’s Committee.

On the occasion, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will unveil a national action plan to protect and promote the treasured culture of Choi singing.

Ho Quoc Dung, Chairman of Binh Dinh province People’s Committee said the province is finalizing a project for the preservation of the art form and to honour individuals and communities that have made contributions to introducing the genre of folk music to the wider public.

Choi singing is a diverse art combining music, poetry, acting, painting, and literature which originated in the central region, mostly in the provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan.
