On January 16, the family of Mr. Nam, 40, in Long Bien District, Hanoi, attended the wedding of a relative. Leaving the wedding, Nam’s children took a bunch of balloons home.

At home, when a niece asked Nam for one balloon to play, he flashed the lighter to fire off the chord. The first balloon was taken off from the bunch successfully but then the balloons exploded because of the fire.

The sound was as big as a gas explosion. Nam and three kids caught fire.

After receiving first aid on the spot, all four people were transferred to the Hanoi’s Saint Paul Hospital with burns on the faces, necks, ears and hands. Doctors said it was lucky that the burns were not deep.

Dr. Nguyen Thong, head of the Burn Ward of Saint Paul Hospital, said burn accidents caused by balloons occur very often during holidays. When cigarette butts touch balloons, they will be punctured; hydrogen will escape from balloons, combined with oxygen to cause explosions, making the whole bunch of balloon explode.

Doctors advise parents to remind their children to play with balloons far away from fire sources.
