VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City authorities have detected a banned chemical named Trifluralin in fish sold at the city’s Binh Dien Wholesale Market.

7.5 tons of banned lean-meat additives seized

Mr. Tran Dinh Vinh, chief of the HCM City Seafood Quality and Resources Management Bureau, says that the agency detected Trifluralin in a batch of fresh-water fish through a random test.

Vinh says that though the content of Trifluralin in the fish is not high but it is still a banned addictive which food must not contain.

This chemical has been banned from use in production and business since 2010 because this chemical is harmful for man’s health.

The official says that the batch of fish with Trifluralin might come from Dong Thap or Tien Giang, the two provinces in the Mekong Delta.

“It is difficult to seek the origin of the fish because the product was traded through several traders before it went to the market,” Mr. Vinh says.

Binh Dien is a seafood wholesale market in HCM City. The market sells tons of seafood of all kinds a day.

The HCM City Seafood Quality and Resource Management Bureau has asked provinces where sell seafood to HCM City to strictly control seafood quality. The bureau will continue testing other samples and give early warnings to customers.

Early, lean-meat addictives have been reportedly found in several samples of pork. Police and the market control forces have also detected tons of lean-meat addictives in HCM City and Hung Yen province.
