Several Vietnam celebrities have been criticised for wearing modifications of the country's traditional long dress, the Ao Dai, but many others have won high praise at international beauty contests.

Vietnam celebrities criticised for Ao Dai changes

Women have chosen to wear the dress in traditional costume sections of beauty contests, and were meticulously designed by talented designers.

Model Thuy Hang said the Ao Dai is not only a symbol of Vietnamese women’s beauty but is highly appreciated for its elegance.

“The long dress has been selected as Vietnam’s national costume as it is simple but elegant and impalpable, which successfully demonstrates the personality of those who wear it," said Hang.

"Models wearing the Ao Dai must be charming and lissome in order to show Vietnamese women’s elegant, ardent and opulent beauty,” she said.

Miss Vietnam 2006 Mai Phuong Thuy left a great impression on international friends in the traditional costume show at the Miss World 2006 in Poland.
 
She wore a black long dress by designer Viet Hung, which was stylized with peacock feathers and beads.

In 2008, Vietnam’s Miss Universe Thuy Lam was among the top 10 contestants most successfully performed their traditional costume.

In 2010 Luu Thi Diem Huong was also named among top 10 contestants who the most beautifully performed their traditional costumes at Miss Earth 2010.

Diem Huong continued to wear the brocade long dress by designer Thuan Viet to attend the Miss Universe 2012.

The long dress was inspired by the Eastern dragon and was named among top 10 the most beautiful traditional costume on the Missosology, a website of beauty pageants.

In 2013, Truong Thi May brought a long dress designed by designer Thuan Viet to the Miss Universe beauty contest. It was inspired by the lotus and had two main colours of red and yellow. It was ranked fourth among top ten most beautiful traditional costumes by Missology.
