A goal from Philani in the second half sent the game into penalties, and Lam Dong stood up to the pressure to win 5-3.

In other games, the V-League's SHB Da Nang, Vicem Hai Phong, Vissai Ninh Binh, Khatoco Khanh Hoa and Kienlongbank Kien Giang all progressed to the second round.

Following a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes, Ninh Binh defeated Tay Ninh 5-4 on penalties. Can Tho also needed penalties to see off Than Quang Ninh, winning 4-2, while Khatoco Khanh Hoa overcame Dong Nai with the same result.

Despite millions of dollars of investment, Hai Phong continued to disappoint fans with a lacklustre performance, but managed to overcome HCM City 3-1 with some individual brilliance from Minh Chau, Thiago and Fagan.

SHB Da Nang travelled to Dong Tam Long An and also made it through to the second round, thanks to goals from Alexander Prent and Gaston Merlo.

The biggest shock of the round went to V-League newcomer Kien Giang who defeated Quang Nam 4-0.
