VietNamNet Bridge – On the evening of April 9-10 at the ongoing Hue Festival, musical instruments made from waste by Max Vandervorst from Blegium attracted thousands of Hue residents and visitors.

At the beginning, the one-hour show drew several dozens of viewers but in the next ten minutes, thousands of people surrounded the stage in Tu Tuong Park, Hue city, to enjoy the show.

Spectators were impressed by the Belgian artist’s talent when he played music by a bottle-made instrument or a chair-leg-made flute.

“When I saw his musical instruments, I was not interested in them at all. But when I heard the sound from them, I was very astonished and admired Max’s gift,” says Hoang Thi Hanh, a tourist from HCM City.

Encouraged by the audience’s rounds of applause, Vandervorst performed a Vietnamese folk song “Trong com” by used milk-cans, accompanied by pianist Marc Couis as an additional gift to viewers. Thousands of people sang the song with him.

Since 1988, Vandervorst has put together a number of performances showcasing instruments he created out of a wide variety of objects. Some of his performances include Symphony for Abandoned Objects, Concerto for Two Bicycles, The Man from Spa, A History of Music, and This is Not a Show. In particular, he created the House of Pataphonia in Dinant (Belgium) with the hope that he could make the world resonate with sound.

He said that it is not difficult to make musical instruments from used things but it is important to create special sounds from these instruments. To make melodies perfect, he combined sounds from his instruments with the sound of piano by Marc R.J Couis. They have worked together for 15 years.

This is the first time they come to Vietnam.
