As Tet 2026 approaches, Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic public spaces are getting a festive makeover. Ben Thanh Market and Turtle Lake, two familiar symbols of the city, are now nearly unrecognizable - with bold new colors and striking decorative motifs that blend heritage with celebration.

Ben Thanh Market: Waves of history and vibrant hues

After nearly two weeks of restoration, Ben Thanh Market and the plaza in front of it have taken on a dramatically new appearance.

One of the most striking elements is the set of wave-shaped patterns painted across the plaza - an artistic nod to the Mekong Delta’s river culture and a reminder of Ben Thanh’s original location by the Ben Nghe River. On this fluid canvas, vibrant “flower boats” stand out, evoking the spirit of spring and renewal.

The market’s roof has been repainted in deep red, while the walls are now in golden tones with elegant white trims. Together, they highlight the central clock tower - an architectural symbol of Saigon’s past.

Around the site, workers are completing the final touches, setting up Tet-themed miniatures and decorations designed to attract both residents and tourists.

Turtle Lake: Soft colors and spiral paths

Just 1.6 kilometers away, Turtle Lake in Xuan Hoa ward has also received a colorful new look. Nearly every surface has been repainted. The pathways, stairs, and railings now glow in a coordinated palette of pale yellow, white, and aquamarine.

Viewed from above, the lake’s spiral paths, once grey stone, now gleam with soft white paint. The unified color scheme across the railing and steps gives the historic space a refreshed yet familiar feel.

Yellow apricot blossom decorations placed around the lake enhance the Tet atmosphere. According to the construction team, LED lighting and more floral installations will follow once painting is completed.

Balancing modern updates with symbolic identity

According to the HCMC People’s Committee, the restoration of these historic public areas is part of a broader effort to enhance urban aesthetics. The goal is not only to beautify but also to strengthen the visual identity of public landmarks - preserving their symbolic meaning while preparing them for modern use.

All renovations are expected to be completed before February 10 (23rd day of the 12th lunar month), just in time for the public to enjoy during Tet 2026.

Local residents have welcomed the change. Dang Che Thanh, from Tan Dinh ward, stopped to admire the revamped Turtle Lake. “I pass by here all the time,” he said. “But this is the first time I’ve seen it renovated so thoroughly and beautifully.”
