Hoang said that these centres operated illegally, without proper licences, and the “eye trainers” possess no qualifications, especially in the field of pediatric refractive errors, which is a difficult field even for professional ophthalmologists.

“Each refractive disorder is different, but these so-called trainers all treat them as the same and give out the same non-scientific exercises,” Hoang said.

The eye bank’s director reaffirmed that refractive errors cannot be "trained" away, and only amenable to surgeries. These centres “cannot treat eye errors, they may actually cause more or worsen existing conditions,” Hoang warned, recommending parents bring their children to professionals in reputable hospitals for treatment.
