Chanh Trach 1 Village in the southern province of Binh Dinh is the only place in Vietnam that grows giant winter melons.
Winter melons are grown throughout the country but only Chanh Trach 1 Village boasts 80-kilo melons.
Local residents often sow winter melon seeds between October and November every year. Several months after that, they set up frames.
Winter melon framers are made very carefully.
In February or March, the trees start blossoming and have small fruits and farmers have to select the best ones. Just one or two fruits are kept for each tree.
By early May, the winter melon weight is around 50-60 kilos. Some are even 80 kilos.
Nguyen Thi Dam, a local resident, said, previously winter melons were quite cheap, so many households abandoned planting them. However, in recent years, sellers from other localities came to the village to buy so the prices increased. At present, a kilo of winter melon is sold at VND5,000.
It is said that only when being grown in the village, this kind of winter melon breed can have such giant weights. Many people came there to take the seeds, but they haven’t mastered the secret to super-sized melons. Being unique in Vietnam, however, to date there has not yet a trademark for the giant winter melon. Many people in the village worried that if the winter melon prices are so low, they will turn to other crops. |
