VietNamNet Bridge – Nguyen Van Luyen, a fisherman from Quy Nhon city in the central province of Binh Dinh, has caught six sharks in Quy Nhon’s sea in the past two weeks.


On the evening of September 12, Luyen caught two sharks, weighing 20kg each, in Hon Dat area. He sold the sharks to traders in the early morning of September 13, for around $100.

One week ago, he also caught four sharks of the same weight in the same area. They are mainly white-stripe sharks.

Since last year, sharks have appeared very often in the sea of Quy Nhon. Some are even over one ton in weight. Sharks attacked over ten people who were swimming near the shore.

On June 12, fisherman Pham Van Giau in Quy Nhon city caught a 50kg shark just nearly 100m from the shore. In July, the Nha Trang Oceanography Institute’s experts netted two white-striped sharks in Quy Nhon.

Local fishermen said they often fished baby sharks to sell to traders at the price of VND50,000-100,000 ($2.5-5) per kilo and VND2-3 million ($80-130) for a set of fins.
