The abusive employer Tran Tan Phong.

On July 8, Mr. Nguyen Cong Danh - Chief Inspector of Dau Tieng district of Binh Duong Province said the inspectors had discovered a series of violations at the wood processing firm in Ca Tong hamlet, Thanh An commune, owned by Tran Tan Phong, 51. This is also the place where a worker named Son Bo Rot, 25 from Soc Trang province, drowned in the effort to escape from this enterprise.

According to the inspection results, this workshop seriously broke the labor law. In 2012, Phong hired 10 employees by signing fake labor contracts. However, these people then fled from the wood enterprise with the assistance of local residents because they could not stand the confinement and harsh working and living environment here.

Particularly in the first half of 2013, Phong hired six workers, including the dead worker, without signing labor contracts. These workers were not registered for temporary residence with the local authorities.

Phong confessed that he hired these workers through several brokers who are specialized in providing Khmer workers. Phong paid the brokers fees and the workers had to bear the debt burden from that fee. This boss also seized personal papers and cell phones of workers and confined them at night. The workers were watched by cameras all the time.

The labor abuse case was only detected after the death of worker Rot on May 26, 2013.

Local police are further investigating the case.
