At a meeting with leaders of Binh Duong People’s Committee on June 13, Preben Elnef, vice chairman of Lego, mentioned the barriers to implementing the project.

The group is waiting for the approval of 1:5000 and 1:2000 detailed construction scale plans for Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park III, where the group wants to build its factory.

Elnef hopes that the province will soon solve the above obstacles so that the group can establish a legal entity in Vietnam, build the factory, and recruit labourers.

Responding to the group’s requirement, Vo Hoang Ngan, director of Binh Duong Department of Construction said that some changes in the Construction Law are causing delays in the approval process of the plans.

“The department is coordinating with agencies and departments to speed up the progress of the project and has committed to completing all procedures by June 30,” Ngan said.

Regarding the land handover, the province had planned to hand over 22 hectares of land in the first phase and continue with the remaining 22ha in the second phase. However, the province will now try its best to allocate the whole 44ha at once if possible.

Work on the factory is scheduled to begin this year, and it will become operational in 2024 to help Lego expand its global supply chain.

The new facility has a total value of more than $1 billion, rendering it one of the largest foreign direct investment projects in Vietnam.

The plant is hoped to generate 4,000 jobs over the next 15 years.
