VietNamNet Bridge – At 8am of July 2, a convoy of hearses spread VND1,000 banknotes and votive papers on a 15km road in Binh Phuoc province.

Witnesses along the road said that relatives of the dead spread VND1,000 banknotes and votive papers along the 15km road from Thuan Phu 1 hamlet to Dong Xoai cemetery in Dong Phu district of Binh Phuoc province.

A lot of people, mainly kids, competed to pick up banknotes, ignoring vehicles on the road.

“Many people are still hungry but they spread real money on the road,” a witness criticized.

A local police officer said that spreading real money on the road is illegal. This act also causes environmental pollution and traffic chaos.

He added that the local government had also told local residents to not follow the customs of spreading votive papers at funeral processions. Violators would be strictly punished in the coming time, he added.

Colonel Hoang Van Hue, director of Binh Phuoc Province Police Agency, said that police would investigate the case.

In Vietnamese law, spreading real money at funeral procession is banned. However, the form of punishment for this act is still unclear.
