This information was gleaned by the Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam (DRVN) from data transmitted to its main server from black boxes (event data recorders) installed in 78,118 vehicles.

A detailed report on traffic violations compiled by the directorate shows the number of speeding violations in October marked a 7.6 per cent increase over the previous month.

The ten cities and provinces with the highest speed limit violations were HCM City, Ha Noi, Da Nang, Dak Lak, Binh Dinh, Nghe An, Hai Phong, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Quang Ngai and Quang Nam.

The black boxes also showed that 52,000 vehicles exceeded the driving limit of four continuous hours. They also recorded an alarming 10,850 instances where the drivers drove for more than ten hours straight.

While all cities and provinces across the nation are recording and transmitting traffic data as instructed by the ministry, 14 localities have not completed their reports on penalizing violators.

The directorate has recommended that the ministry impose harsher punishments on violators as well as provincial transport departments that do not comply with the ministry's instructions.

It has also stressed the importance of awarding more severe punishments for violations by vehicles operating during the night, as well as those operating on dangerous roads in mountainous areas.

The directorate's report notes that provincial transport departments revoked 111 licences, temporarily withheld another 59 and refused to issue 24 permits based on traffic violations data collected in October.
