Buon Don is a border district, located in the northwest of Dak Lak province. It consists of 7 commune-level administrative units, with 87 villages and hamlets, including 24 ethnic minority villages.

Each ethnic group has its own identity associated with unique cultural and artistic activities. Therefore, the upcoming festival will be an opportunity for ethnic groups to meet, exchange and unite, contributing to preserving and promoting the unique identity of ethnic groups in Buon Don district.

The People's Committee of Buon Don district has issued a decision on the Charter and Regulations of the Buon Don Cultural Festival and Elephant Festival 2023. The local authorities have also reached an agreement with the elephant owners and handlers on the specific content and program of the fesitval. At the same time, the organizing board has discussed with artisans, village elders and shamen on the rituals and offerings at the festival.

This year's elephant festival has the participation of 7 elephants from Krong Na commune, 2-9 Dak Lak Import-Export Company Limited, and Ban Don - Anh Duong Ecotourism Site.

This year, the Elephant Festival will not organize elephant running, elephant swimming, elephant soccer competitions or tug of war competitions between elephants and humans. Instead, Buon Don will organize the following activities: Elephant Health Worshiping Ceremony, Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony of the Elephant Festival, Elephant Makeup Contest, Elephant Buffet, Elephant Greeting Contest, and taking pictures with elephants.

The Traditional Cultural Festival will feature the following activities such as beauty pageant contest, carving wooden folk statues of ethnic groups in the Central Highlands, weaving, knitting, making traditional musical instruments, pounding rice and throwing shuttlecock competitions, and introduction of traditional dishes, traditional costume performance…

The opening ceremony will have a parade, offerings to the god ritual; traditional fire lighting, gong performance, and xoang dance performance.

This is considered an opportunity to honor and promote the unique and special cultural values of ethnic minorities in Buon Don district to local residents and tourists, contributing to promoting traditional cultural values associated with tourism development, creating momentum for local socio-economic development.
