At least one person has been killed and seven others seriously injured when a sleeper coach plunged off the Lo Xo pass in Quang Nam Province around noon yesterday.

The sleeper bus was carrying 50 passengers; of them some 33 are reportedly still stuck in the pass.

According to the traffic police of Phuoc Son District, Quang Nam Province, the bus was traveling from Dak Nong Province to Ha Noi. It reached a spot between Quang Nam and Kon Tum when it jumped off the pass to 100m.

Son, head of the police of Phuoc Son District, was quoted by online news site vnexpress as saying that the sleeper bus probably damaged its brake.

More rescue efforts are said to be under way.

The Lo Xo pass spans 27km between Phuoc Son District in Quang Nam Province and Dak Glei District in Kon Tum Province.

From 2011 until April 2014, some 19 traffic accidents, with 14 casualties and 45 injured cases, were recorded in Lo Xo pass.
