There are a lot of well-known faces among the newly elected 200 members of the Party Central Committee. They are managers of large state-owned economic groups and general corporations.

One of them is Pham Viet Thanh, president of Vietnam Airlines, the nation’s flag air carrier.

Thanh, born in 1962, has a doctorate in business administration. He has been at the post of chair of Vietnam Airlines’ members’ board since June 2011. Prior to that, he had been Vietnam Airlines deputy CEO since August 2003.

Thanh represents the state capital at the Vietnamese largest air carrier which accounts for 35 percent of the carrier’s charter capital.

Founded in 1956 under the name Vietnam Civil Aviation, the airline was established as a state-owned enterprise in April 1989. The airline flies to 52 destinations in 17 countries.

Nguyen Van Thang, Dr of Economics, born in 1973, president of VietinBank, is another well-known businessman. He has been working for VietinBank since 1996 at many different positions. He was a member of the board of directors and CEO of the bank.

VietinBank, established in 1988 after it separated from the State Bank of Vietnam, is one of the largest banks compared as the pillar of the Vietnam banking system.

VietinBank is a bank where the state holds the controlling stake. It has a large network with one exchange center, 151 branches and 1,000 transaction offices, and 9 subsidiaries. It is the first Vietnamese commercial bank to set up branches in Europe. 

Nguyen Manh Hung, CEO of Viettel, a military telecom group, has also been named in the list. Hung was born in 1962 and is now Major General. Besides the position at Viettel, Hung is now also deputy president of the Military Bank.

He studied electronics and telecommunications in the former Soviet Union. After that, he obtained a master’s degree majoring in telecommunication in Australia. He also has master’s degree in business administration from the Hanoi Economics University.

Hung has been working for Viettel since the first day it was established in 1989. He became Viettel’s deputy CEO in January 2000 and has been working as CEO since March 1, 2014.

Hung is considered the ‘soul’ of Viettel, who was credited with turning mobile service and internet into popular services.

Viettel focuses on telecommunication, information technology, making outward investment, and manufacturing devices.

Some other members of the Party Central Committee now hold important positions in the government, but they were businessmen in the past. These include Le Van Thanh, Secretary of the Hai Phong City Party Committee. Thanh was once the general director of Hai Phong Cement Company.
