Ca Mau Airport was built under French colonial rule with a 1,500-metre runway, capable of receiving only small aircraft such as the Embraer E190 and ATR72.

The airport is now serving five flights weekly to HCM City and three weekly flights to Hanoi.

According to the Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee, the Hanoi-Ca Mau air route which was launched this April, has seen an 80 percent seat booking rate.

However, many facilities at Ca Mau Airport have yet to be upgraded with the only runway being limited in size and capable of low bearing capacity, airlines are facing difficulties operating flights and opening new routes to the airport.

The committee proposed supporting the airlines that are having to reduce capacity due to the airport's poor facilities.

The province will provide financial support valued at 10 percent of the seats per flight.

The prices used for calculating the subsidy will be VND3 million per ticket for flights over 1,000 km; VND2 million per ticket for flight distance of between 500-1,000 km, and VND 1.50 million each for flights of below 500 km.

Ca Mau Airport has plans to be upgraded to receive Airbus 320/321 planes by 2030 and serve three million passengers per year.

Ca Mau province is home to diverse fauna, especially birds, which makes it an attractive eco-tourism destination. Surrounded by sea on three sides, the coastal province is also home to numerous national historical and cultural sites, while the combination of ethnic cultures creates abundant festivals and cultural features such as floating markets and regattas.
