VietNamNet Bridge - Many rivers in the southernmost province of Ca Mau are covered with waste although the local authorities have announced to fine anyone who discharges rubbish in public.
Like many new urban areas in the southwestern region, in the city of Ca Mau, there are thousands of families building houses along the river like this.
They discharge garbage into the river. The waste drifts toward the Ca Mau - Bac Lieu canals, causing water pollution.
Rubbish sometime causes trouble for vessels operating in this route.
Ca Mau residents live with garbage.
To protect the environment, the city government have announced to impose a VND100,000 to VND300,000 ($5-15) fine on anyone who discharges rubbish in public.
Previously, there was a panel at the foot of Ca Mau Bridge that noted "The river without garbage." Now this panel is a bare steel frame and the river is filled with garbage.
The smell rises from the wharf for high-speed boats in Ca Mau City.
Nobody cares of the sign that bans discharging rubbish to the river in the wharf.
