Speaking at the meeting, CPP President Chea Sim reviewed the historical period when Cambodia was ruled by the Pol Pot regime between 1975 and 1979 and the establishment of the United Front for National Salvation in late 1978 in an effort to gather forces for the struggle against the genocidal regime.
January 7, 1979 marks the revival day of the Cambodian people and the second birthday of each Cambodian citizen, Chea Sim said.
Cambodia always remembers sacrifice of united armed forces for national salvation and great support of Vietnamese volunteers, who responded to the urgent appeal for help of the Cambodian people.
The CPP President voiced his support for the trial judging former Khmer Rouge leaders to bring justice to Cambodian people, and for peace, stability and national concord in the country.
Reviewing Cambodia’s achievements in the cause of national concord and construction as well as regional and international integration, Chea Sim said the country’s economy grew about 7 percent in 2011 despite difficulties, especially the worst flooding in the last decade.
He also expressed his hope that the legislative elections at central and grassroots levels in 2012 and 2013 will take place equitably.

"This is a big job and needs a lot of discussions. However, we are confident that we can finalise it by this year," said Om Yin Tieng, Cambodian senior Minister and Chair of the ASEAN Inter-governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) in 2012.
According to the ASEAN Secretariat, the AICHR will host its first meeting on the declaration in Siem Reap, Cambodia on Jan. 8-9, ahead of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting.
