The Can Tho City Human Rights Steering Committee, in collaboration with the Government’s Permanent Office on Human Rights, organized the 2024 Human Rights Training Workshop.
The event was chaired by Nguyen Ngoc He, Vice Chairman of the Can Tho People's Committee and Head of the City’s Human Rights Steering Committee. It brought together 250 participants, including committee members and representatives responsible for human rights from various city departments and agencies.
During the workshop, Nguyen Ngoc He highlighted the city’s recent achievements in socio-economic development and efforts to improve the material and spiritual lives of its citizens.
In the first half of 2024, Can Tho maintained stable security and order. The city’s Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) increased by 5.73% compared to the same period last year, with job creation for 34,178 workers, reaching 67.54% of the annual plan, a 22.17% increase from 2023. Rural development programs significantly improved infrastructure and living conditions in rural areas.
The Human Rights Steering Committee has effectively advised the City Party Committee and People’s Committee on solutions to maintain stability and improve social welfare.
These efforts included ongoing support for 42,792 individuals under social protection programs, providing over VND 24 billion monthly.
Additionally, 4,942 individuals who contributed to the revolutionary cause received regular subsidies. Thirty houses were handed over to families of war veterans and those in need.
The workshop featured two key presentations: “Human Rights Work in the New Context” and “Current Trends in New Religious Movements and Solutions.”
These sessions provided practical insights into promoting human rights, equipping grassroots-level officials with tools to better ensure human rights protection and promotion.
Major General Nguyen Van Ky emphasized that human rights work is a collective responsibility requiring cooperation across all levels of government and society. He urged the Can Tho Human Rights Steering Committee to continue advising on programs that enhance socio-economic development, reduce poverty, and support vulnerable groups.
He also stressed the importance of protecting religious freedom, minority rights, and combating activities exploiting democratic and human rights issues for subversive purposes.
Nguyen Van Ky called on departments and agencies to take greater responsibility in implementing human rights initiatives, ensuring timely and effective solutions to improve rights protection at the grassroots level.
In his concluding remarks, Nguyen Ngoc He instructed delegates to disseminate and internalize the workshop’s content within their respective units and localities.
He emphasized the importance of recognizing the critical role of human rights work and focusing on core issues to improve advisory and implementation efforts.
