The celebration, entitled 70 Years of Viet Nam Sports in the Development of the Nation, will kick off with a music and dance performance on Friday at the Viet Nam Culture and Art Exhibition Centre.

After the performance, the National Sports Administration will hold a ceremony to honour Vietnamese athletes who have performed well in 2015.

The organisers will deliver awards to the 10 best athletes and five best coaches of the year. Five athletes with disabilities and three people coaching them will also receive the honour.

In the next several days, an exhibition of the nation’s sports over the past 70 years will be displayed at the centre, 2 Hoa Lu Street.

Photos, excerpts of documents and subjects will be exhibited under different themes, such as President Ho Chi Minh and Sports, Elite Sports and Training, and Practising Activities.

“The exhibition will bring an overview of the establishment and development of sport over the past 70 years to the people,” said Hoang Du, deputy head of the organising board, at a press conference yesterday (March 22) in Ha Noi. “All visitors will understand more about national sports and our achievements in world competitions. They will acknowledge the role of sport in society and its importance to the growth of the nation.”

Du expects that the event will push up people’s spirits and encourage them, especially the children, to practise sport with a view to improve their health and quality of life.

Ha Noi and HCM City, which are the two biggest sport centres, will have their own space to display their achievements and plans for the future.

The organisers will also promote the Asian Beach Games, the largest event of the year, to be held in Da Nang.

There will be other activities such as motorbike and sport bike parades, mass tai chi performances, aerobics, yoga and a fair.

Companies and enterprises have registered to take part in the events, with their kiosks providing sport equipment, nutritious products, drinks and food.

The event will be free, and open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. until it closes on March 28.
