The car -- driven by Tran Xuan Dong, 34 who was allegedly in a drowsy state -- was reportedly travelling at high speed from the North to South before it suddenly swerved and crashed into a utility pole made of concrete before ramming into the restaurant at 677 Pham Van Dong Street, Zone 5 of Nui Thanh District.

The seven victims died at the scene. The three injured were immediately rushed to emergency aid. The restaurant owner Tran Thi Nga, 45, was among the injured.

Witnesses said they saw three people aboard the car at the time of the accident.

Initial investigation showed that it was the driver’s drowsiness that caused the accident.

The dead victims include three children from 9-12 years old.

Locals collected money from passers-by to help relatives of the victims.
