The accident occurred 1km from the Can Tho Bridge in the Mekong Detla’s Can Tho Province.

Due to the heavy load, the boat broke down and capsized immediately. The food was soaked in water. Luckily, the two people on board, a father and son, were safe.

The total property damage was estimated at more than VND100 million (US$4,500).

The boat with a 35-tonne capacity was sailing from An Giang Province to Can Tho Province when the accident occurred.

The captain was identified as Nguyen Van Song, 47, living in Hau Giang Province.

Initial investigation revealed that the boat’s captain had limited visibility due to the darkness at the time of the accident, which took place at 3am.

The Ninh Kieu District police mobilised another boat the same morning to salvage the damaged food and tow the sinking boat ashore.
