Wolfoo, a famous cartoon character produced and copyrighted by Sconnect, was introduced to the public in 2018. Just after a short time of launching, Wolfoo quickly won the hearts of parents and children in the US. It is present in many other countries with billions of views per month on social network platforms.

The cartoon is produced with many different versions in 20 languages. As many as 4,700 short episodes have appeared on YouTube (3-5 minutes for each episode), and hundreds of long episodes (10-15 minutes) have appeared on TV platforms, and OTT/IPTV in many countries. There are also 100-minute versions aired on large screens.

Wolfoo is loved all over the globe for its entertaining and educational content. Each episode gives a lesson that helps children develop traits such as courage, gratitude, kindness, and a desire to learn.

Wolfoo’s success shows the impressive creativity of Vietnamese cartoon makers.

Following the success with Wolfoo, many people have asked if Sconnect has any plans to create works which bear Vietnamese cultural features.

Ta Manh Hoang, the founder and CEO of Sconnect, said: “I don’t think that characters in animated film must wear Vietnamese clothes or show Vietnamese habits and customs, and scenes to prove the Vietnamese spirit."

“A product 100 percent made in Vietnam which can be spread widely can prove the Vietnamese people’s capability, virtues and skills,” he said.

In 2022, Sconnect began cooperating with other companies to offer more Vietnamese cartoons to the world.

‘Trang Quynh thoi nhi nho’ – first 3D multi-episode

Trang Quynh (Doctoral Scholar Quynh) is a legendary character in Vietnamese folklore, famous for his satirical and humorous personality.

Sconnect has cooperated with Alpha Studio to produce and air the first cartoon series made with 3D technology in August 2023.

‘Trang Quynh thoi nhi nho’ (Trang Quynh in his childhood) is based on the famous Vietnamese folk character Trang Quynh. The film is expected to have 450 episodes. To date, 60 episodes have been released, with many episodes showing traditional Vietnamese festivals such as Mid-Autumn Festival and Doan Ngo Festival.

Trang Quynh thoi nhi nho uses modern 3D technology which helps increase depth of the images, and brings a more vivid experience than 2D animation. In addition to releasing the version on digital platforms, Sconnect and Alpha Studio plan to produce a big screen film.

The animated film shows the production capacity of the Vietnamese animation industry in adapting Vietnamese content for the large screen to serve domestic and international audiences.

Stopmotion: inspired by traditional crafts

There are about 5,400 traditional craft villages in Vietnam, of which 1,700 villages are highly appreciated for their cultural value and artistic characteristics. This is the inspiration for Sconnect to choose Stopmotion.

Stopmotion is a filming technique in which successive positions of objects are photographed to produce the appearance of movement.

Unlike all the other animation technologies which are implemented with computers, Stopmotion has a specific characteristic that films are created from thousands of images. Therefore, all the setting, props and characters must be made manually.

This technology is a fertile land for Vietnamese companies to show their creativity and meticulousness, which are the strengths of the Vietnamese staff.

Having to compete with modern production technologies, Stopmotion animation still attracts audiences. It is a new technology in Vietnam, so the potential of the technology remains great.

According to Nguyen Anh Tung from Sconnect, the company’s staff met artisans who make ‘to he’ (Vietnamese toy figurine for children) to learn their skills. However, in order to make Stopmotion cartoons, Sconnect still needs many other skills.

In order to meet the requirements of filmmaking, the staff conduct research to create lively scenes and shorten the film production process.

Several attractive Stopmotion series such as Tiny Series and Luka have attracted hundreds of million of views each month. The first Stopmotion animated film is expected to be aired in the near future in Vietnam.
