Tran Dinh Quang, deputy head of the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone (EZ) Authority, said the project will dredge a 14km section of the river, of which 9.5km runs through Hoi An City.

Quang said the project will include construction of seven bridges spanning over the river for transport of local residents on the river banks.

Hoi An City plans to clear 13.7ha for the project.

Sand collected from the project will be used for construction projects in Hoi An and Dien Ban towns as well as re-sanding the badly eroded Cua Dai Beach.

Earlier this year, the province dredged 70,000 cubic metres of sand from the Cua Dai estuary to save the Cua Dai Beach from erosion.

In 2015, Quang Nam also invested VND825 billion ($39 million) to dredge two main ports of Tam Hiep and Ky Ha to help cargo ships reach them.

The province and Da Nang City have been seeking funds to re-open the river tour service in the Co Co River.
