VietNamNet Bridge – The President of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), Chea Sim, was re-elected as President of the Senate in the third tenure on March 24.

At the first session of the third legislature, chaired by King Norodom Sihamoni, the senators also voted for Say Chhum, the CPP Secretary General, as the first Vice President, and Tep Ngon, a member of the CPP, as the second Vice President of the Senate.

On this occasion, King Norodom Sihamoni expressed the hope that the newly elected senators will fulfill their important role as the country’s supreme legislative body, ensuring observance of the basic principles of a democratic system and the implementation of the Constitution, as well as monitoring and balancing State power.

The senate was established on March 25, 1999 and the election is held every six years. The third mandate of the Senate consists of 61 Senators including 46 from the CPP, 11 from Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), two appointed by King Norodom Sihamoni, and two others nominated by the National Assembly.
