Vietnamese Grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son now stands among the top 100 men chess players in the world, according to the latest World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings.

The 21 year old Grandmaster leapt up 23 places from 106th to 83rd in the rankings with his Elo rating rising from 2644 to 2662.

His rise up the rankings is the result of his performance at the World Chess Cup 2011 in Russia last September plus his bronze medal at the 1st Qin Huangdao Open Chess Tournament in China early last month.

Meanwhile, Vietnam's top chess player, Le Quang Liem, dropped three positions to 28th in the world rankings while his Elo rating fell from 2717 to 2714.

Liem, who recently won the US 2011 SPICE Cup in Texas on October 25, failed to increase his Elo rating due to his modest results in the Qin Huangdao Open Chess Tournament, placing only ninth.

20 year old Grandmaster Liem lost Elo points in the Chinese tournament for losing to rivals placed far below him in the world rankings.

Liem, however, still maintains his second place in the list of the world’s top 20 young chess players, after Italian Fabiano Caruana, who has an Elo rating of 2727.
