Vietnam went down to bitter defeat in their first four group matches, and they have no chance to qualify for the finals.

Rumour has it that assistant coach Hoang Anh Tuan would replace Phuc to manage the national squad following their clash against Hong Kong on March 5.

“It is a sensitive issue that might affect players’ psychology prior to the match. I will come to a decision as soon as the match ends,” Phuc told reporters at the team’s warm-up exercise on February 28.

“Though we have no chance, we will try our best to live up to fans’ expectations,” he said.

On February 27, Phuc appointed top striker Cong Vinh to captain the national squad in preparation for the Asian Cup qualifier.

Midfielders Thanh Luong and Minh Chau were selected as assistant captains.

Vietnam will play a friendly with the Republic of Korea’s Students team on March 2.
