In order to teach the meaning of the traditional Tet Han Thuc (Cold Food Festival) to children as well as bring joy and excitement to students, many schools in Hanoi provide lessons on making 'banh troi' (round sticky rice cake with brown sugar filling) and 'banh chay' (glutinous rice dumplings filled with mung bean paste in syrup).
Students at the Hanoi Technology Education Primary School are eager to make ‘banh troi’ and ‘banh chay’. Before making ‘banh troi’ and ‘banh chay’, the teacher explains the meaning of Tet Han Thuc. Children learn to make ‘banh troi’ from different ingredients including beet, coconut and green tea. A teacher is guiding meticulous students on the steps to making ‘banh troi’. Students are very interested in learning about the country’s traditional custom as well as making the traditional food by themselves. Children are very skilled at making ‘banh troi’.
