A recent report shows high demand for security cameras in Vietnam, with 150 million products in 2023. The country imports 5-6 million cameras each year, mostly household and business appliances.
Most cameras available in the market are made in China. The Gioi Di Dong and Dien May Xanh retail chains are selling Imou, Tp-link, Tiandy, Ezviz, Xiaomi and Botzlab products. CellphoneS sells Chinese wi-fi cameras made by Ezviz, Xiaomi, Tp-link and Yoosee. At FPT Shop, one can find IP cameras bearing Xiaomi, Tp-link, Ezviz and Imou brands, especially Xiaomi products for indoor and outdoor use.
The same products are seen on e-commerce platforms, Shopee, Lazada and Tiki.
A survey by Metric conducted from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024 found that surveillance cameras on Shoppee, Lazada and Tik brought turnover of VND748.6 billion with 1.8 million products sold, an increase of 14.68 percent over the same period of previous years.
There were 341 surveillance camera brands available on e-commerce platforms and most of them were Chinese.
Yoosee was among the top 3 brands with the highest amount of cameras sold, which accounted for 31.9 percent. The second position belonged to Imou with 22 percent and Ezviz 20.4 percent. In terms of revenue, No 1 belonged to Imou (27 percent), followed by Ezviz (26 percent) and Yoosee (21.7 percent).
Observers said Yoosee cameras are considered low-cost, low-quality products which are not equipped with security features. The other products are more expensive and bring higher turnover.
Ha Anh Phuong, CEO of Domino, a security camera distributor, confirmed that 90 percent of products in the market are from China. There are also European, American and Singaporean products, or OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing).
Phuong said that Chinese products don’t always mean low-quality products.
VietNamNet reporters who conducted a survey recently could only find a few Make in Vietnam cameras in the market. There are smart cameras and surveillance cameras made by FPT and Viettel, but the products are mostly displayed at the manufacturers’ retail chains.
VietNamNet found camera products made by Hanet, FPT, Viettel and VNPT on Shopee, Lazada and Tiki, but the sales were modest, while Tiki said that the products had run out.
Metric’s reports show that there is no Make in Vietnam brand listed among best-selling brands and products.
The absence of Vietnam-made cameras in the market is a problem. If Vietnamese continue using foreign-made products, they face the risk of information leakage.
