Self-driving car pilot project in Mong Cai City.

The authorities of Lang Son Province submitted the proposal to let Chinese tourist drivers enter the province as part of a programme with Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Chief of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung approved the one-year pilot project after Lang Son provincial authorities complete management plan.

According to the Ministry of Transport, Vietnam and China haven't had any agreement over cars being driven by tourists. Last year, the prime minister allowed Quang Ninh People’s Committee to start a pilot project of self-driving tourist cars between Mong Cai and Dongxing cities through Mong Cai international border gate.

Lang Son provincial authorities were asked to closely monitor the project so that no tourist cars venture out of the authorised zones, find out whether there was demand to use cars in order to set up suitable controls. The Ministry of Transport asked tourists to install positioning devices which are managed by tourism firms until the tours end.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence is more cautious, saying that the self-driving car pilot project between Mong Cai and Dongxing cities was not very effective. The terrain in Lang Son and Dongxing caused difficulties for management. The ministry suggested waiting for the final results after the pilot project in Mong Cai City ends.

Other ministries including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Finance also approved tourist self-driving car project in Lang Son and asked the local authorities to submit more detail report.
